Car Erupts in Flames and Rolls Down Newmarket Street
A dramatic fire in Auckland’s Newmarket suburb left onlookers stunned after a parked car burst into flames and began rolling backwards down the street.
The incident unfolded around 8.30pm on Seccombes Road, when Fire and Emergency NZ crews were called to reports of a vehicle engulfed in flames.
Video footage from witnesses shows the car parked in a five-minute bay, already consumed by fire before firefighters arrived. In another clip, the blazing vehicle can be seen rolling backwards down the road — flames shooting into the night — before it crashes into a fire truck.
Firefighters quickly moved in, using hoses to extinguish the flames as the car came to a stop against the truck.
A spokesperson for Fire and Emergency NZ said one crew responded and managed to put out the fire in under an hour. No injuries were reported.
