EB Games in New Zealand Faces Potential Closure of All Stores

EB Games is exploring the possibility of shutting down all its New Zealand stores, marking a significant shift in the company’s future. According to a letter sent to employees by managing director Shane Stockwell, the closure is still under review, with no final decision yet made.

Stockwell emphasized that a thorough consultation process with the affected team members will take place before any closure is confirmed. The proposal suggests closing not only the retail outlets but also the New Zealand Distribution Centre, which could result in the disestablishment of all roles within the company’s New Zealand operations.

The Australian-based retailer, which has been owned by GameStop since 2005, operates 38 stores in New Zealand and a much larger presence in Australia with 336 stores. However, with the company facing ongoing financial struggles, particularly after a multi-million-dollar loss in the 2024 fiscal year, the retail market in New Zealand is proving increasingly unviable.

“We have already made considerable efforts to turn the business around,” Stockwell wrote, acknowledging the company’s inability to improve its performance. While the future of the New Zealand business looks bleak, there could be potential opportunities for employees to transfer to EB Games stores in Australia.

The company is currently collecting feedback on the closure proposal from employees, with responses required by January 12.
