Melissa Stokes to Take Over as 1News at Six Presenter as Simon Dallow Steps Down
A major change is coming to New Zealand’s most-watched news programme. TVNZ has announced Melissa Stokes as the new 1News at Six presenter, following Simon Dallow’s decision to step down at the end of the month after an extraordinary broadcasting career spanning nearly two decades.
Dallow, 61, has been a familiar face in living rooms across the country, fronting coverage of New Zealand’s biggest national moments — including the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes, the mosque attacks, the Covid-19 pandemic, and Cyclone Gabrielle.
TVNZ Chief Executive Jodi O’Donnell described Dallow as an “exceptional journalist and presenter” whose professionalism and composure have earned the respect of viewers and colleagues alike.
“He’s part of why 1News at Six continues to reach one million New Zealanders on broadcast TV, as well as being TVNZ+’s most-streamed show,” O’Donnell said.
“His departure marks the end of an era for 1News at Six, and we are deeply grateful for his years of service.”
End of an Era for a Trusted Voice
Dallow began his television career in 1993 after working as a barrister, appearing on Newsnight, other 1News bulletins, and hosting political shows Agenda and Q+A before taking over the 6pm slot — initially alongside Wendy Petrie.
His calm presence and commitment to accuracy made him one of the most trusted figures in New Zealand journalism. TVNZ says his final broadcast will be on November 28, marking the close of a remarkable chapter for the network.

Melissa Stokes Steps Into Lead Role
Stepping into the spotlight will be Melissa Stokes, who moves from her weekend presenting role to become the new weekday anchor.
Stokes’ TVNZ career spans more than 20 years, with roles ranging from reporter to 1News Europe Correspondent. She has been a fixture on 1News weekends since 2019, earning a reputation for warmth, clarity, and credibility.
O’Donnell said Stokes was a natural choice to lead the nation’s flagship news programme.
“We are incredibly fortunate to have someone of Melissa’s calibre appointed as our lead presenter for 1News at Six,” O’Donnell said.
“Her experience, alongside the leadership role she plays in our newsroom, makes her a natural successor. Her enduring relationship with our audience will help guide them through this transition for our biggest show.”
TVNZ has described the move as both the end of an era and the start of a new chapter — one that keeps continuity while welcoming a fresh voice to the country’s most trusted news desk.
