One Love Music Festival Canceled for 2026 Amid Economic Strain
Tauranga’s renowned One Love music festival has officially canceled its planned 2026 event, citing a range of difficult challenges that have made hosting the festival unfeasible. The festival, known for its reggae lineup and large crowds, draws tens of thousands to the Bay of Plenty each year. Organizers have been grappling with the current economic situation, which they say has taken a toll on both the festival’s budget and its audience.
A Facebook post from the event’s team revealed the decision to cancel the 2026 festival, with organizers explaining that the ongoing cost-of-living crisis was making it increasingly difficult for attendees, especially those traveling from afar, to afford the experience. Over 80% of festival-goers typically travel for the event, placing additional financial strain on households already feeling the impact of rising living costs.
“To put it simply, we’re in a position where we cannot deliver the event to the high standard that you all deserve,” the post stated. The festival's team considered a smaller version of the event but ultimately decided that it would not be true to the spirit of One Love, a festival that prides itself on delivering a full, immersive experience.
This decision has also been influenced by other unexpected behind-the-scenes developments that affected the planning process. The organizers emphasized that the changes were necessary to preserve the festival’s legacy, but they also shared their commitment to bringing the festival back in future years when conditions improve.
One Love’s organizers also addressed past concerns about the festival’s former owner, Pato Alvarez, who sold the event in 2022. In 2023, Alvarez was convicted of serious charges related to an incident involving a babysitter. The festival confirmed that Alvarez is no longer involved in the event in any capacity and that the sale of the festival was completed properly with all obligations met.
In addition, the festival's management is undergoing some internal transitions, including changes in leadership and ownership, aimed at ensuring the future success and reputation of One Love. While 2026 may not see the festival return, organizers assured fans they were working diligently on plans for the future.
