The incident began around 4:30pm when police received multiple reports of dangerous driving on State Highway 1 south from Cambridge. The Lexus operator was driving significantly above the legal speed limit, with observations indicating speeds exceeding 80kmh above the limit, while repeatedly cutting off other vehicles on the road. Police linked the vehicle to an aggravated robbery that had taken place in Tauranga the previous day.
Officers located the vehicle near Tīrau and identified it as a vehicle of interest connected to the Tauranga incident. Law enforcement coordinated response efforts by positioning units ahead of the vehicle and preparing to deploy road spikes as a containment strategy. The spikes were deployed twice during the pursuit—once on Oturoa Road near State Highway 36 and again on Hamurana Road at approximately 5:30pm.
Despite the spike deployments, the vehicle continued toward State Highway 36, where it crashed violently into an oncoming truck. The impact caused the Lexus to catch fire immediately. The young driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while the two young passengers became trapped inside the burning vehicle with serious injuries.
First responders and bystanders responded with remarkable courage, rushing toward the burning wreckage with fire extinguishers despite the significant danger posed by the flames and smoke. Approximately 18 extinguishers were deployed to suppress the fire and prevent further harm to the trapped occupants. These collective efforts proved lifesaving for the two passengers who were subsequently extracted and transported to hospital in serious condition.
The truck driver involved in the collision sustained only minor injuries and received on-site treatment from ambulance personnel. Several police officers also required medical attention for minor burns and smoke inhalation sustained while helping to control the fire.
A critical incident investigation has been initiated, and the Independent Police Conduct Authority has been notified. The Serious Crash Unit conducted a thorough scene examination that continued into the night. State Highway 36 was reopened to traffic approximately midnight following the completion of investigative work at the scene.
