Minister Leaves Door Open to Shutting Down Gloriavale After Shocking Child Abuse Allegations

A senior government minister has refused to rule out shutting down the Gloriavale Christian community after deeply disturbing allegations emerged about child punishment practices described as “horrendous.”

Social Development and Employment Minister Louise Upston said the Government is taking the matter “very, very seriously” following reports that babies and children were subjected to a suffocation-like disciplinary technique.

The revelation comes as authorities now visit the West Coast commune multiple times a week, and a new ministerial group — made up of 10 ministers — has been formed to coordinate the Government’s response. The group was established after the Royal Commission into Abuse in Care released its final report recommending that all practical measures be taken to protect Gloriavale’s residents.
