Ikea NZ: What We’re Getting That Australia Isn’t

With Ikea’s first New Zealand store opening at Sylvia Park on December 4, the Swedish homeware giant has revealed its food menu — and yes, Kiwis are getting some exclusives that our Australian neighbours can’t claim.

Top of the list: a lingonberry pavlova for $4. The berry is a Scandinavian staple, but the pavlova twist is a clear swing at local tastebuds (and a cheeky nod to the ongoing “who invented it?” debate with Australia).

Ikea says it carried out hundreds of home visits across Aotearoa to see what people actually eat. The top answers? Fish and chips and pie.

So both are on the menu:
Fish and chips using sustainably caught NZ hoki ($14)
Lamb pie ($6.50)

Food manager Daniel Souza says the goal is to make the store somewhere people hang out, not just shop. “Hungry customers buy less,” he said.

Other NZ-only items include:
• Salmon poke bowl
• Thai beef salad
• Pumpkin salad with hummus

Plus, the world-first Eatball Medley:
4 original meatballs + 4 plant balls + 4 veggie balls on the same plate.

There will be three places to eat inside:
• The sit-down Ikea Swedish Restaurant
• The Bistro for quick bites
• The Swedish Food Market for take-home snacks and sauces
